Gutterpress proof

Markdown & CSS, typeset for printOpen source · by Dimm City

The desktop app

The Gutterpress app is an editor, a live preview of your book's printed pages, and the tools to turn it into a PDF and publish it, in one window. It is self-contained: there is nothing else to install. These guides walk through doing things in it, one task per page.

Change one setting first. A new install starts in Reader mode, which shows just the pages. To write and set up a book, open Settings (the gear in the bottom-right corner, or Ctrl+,), and under App → How you use Gutterpress choose Author.

How-to guides

  1. Install the app and open it for the first time
  2. Create a new book, or open one
  3. Write and preview your book
  4. Insert snippets and components
  5. Change your book's design
  6. Add plugins and formatting extras
  7. Save a PDF
  8. Publish your book
  9. Keep versions and back up your work
  10. Settings, updates and getting help

How a book is written and styled — markdown, layout markers, images, CSS custom properties — is the same in the app and on the command line; the writing and design chapters of the documentation cover it.
